The Die Casting Process

If you talk about the die casting process you are talking about a technique that has helped to revolutionize the world. A number of things in our daily lives are formed through this method, although we aren't even conscious of it. The die casting process itself utilizes a simple concept, but it has helped to develop the world's industry in quite a lot of ways.

The process involves utilizing complex molds called dies. These dies are the heart of the concept. The process starts by melting a metal inside a furnace and injecting it into the mold to make complex shapes. The shapes are sometimes known as geometric shapes because of their distinctive design and features. As they are melted and injected they are clamped into place then allowed to cool. Once cool the molds are separated and the completed product is released.

The two most typical metals used for this process are zinc and aluminum. They're categorized as non-ferrous alloys as they do not intentionally contain iron. Because of this they are softer and may be manipulated much easier.

There are actually two kinds of die casting machines: a hot chamber machine and a cold chamber machine. The difference is really the opposite of the name. A hot chamber is for low melting temperatures, which will include zinc, while a cold temperature machine will be for metals just like aluminum, which have a high melting temperature.

Another key difference with the 2 types of machines employed in the die casting process is the operating pressures needed to perform the process. For hot chambers the usual operating pressure are between 1,000 and 5,000 psi. But for cold chambers the operating pressures are much more- between 2,000 and 20,000 psi.
