Review Of Hurley, The Latest Record From Geek Rockers Weezer
Geek rockers Weezer return this year with their 8th studio album. After the extremely mixed reviews their prior effort (Raditude) got, what's the story on Weezer's new album, Hurley?
1) Memories
An OK pop-rock song with a captivating chorus, and stereotypically simple Weezer lyrics. Showcasing backing vocals by Johnny Knoxville and co!
2) Ruling Me
Now and then the newer Weezer songs have been criticised for being too superficial, and this track is not going to allay that criticism. However, it's great for what it is: a simple, positive power-pop offering.
3) Trainwrecks
This is a deeper, more thoughtful, slower track with beautiful crunchy guitars and touching hooks.
4) Unspoken
Best track on the record. Starting off as a light and breezy acoustic track, with a little atmospheric flute, it finishes with some weighty guitar!
5) Where's my sex?
This is a crunchier track, but only in terms of the sound; not the lyrics. It's not about sex, instead, it's about socks. A bit uninspired, but the bridge is decent.
6) Run Away
Deep and touching song, with an angsty, almost resentful feel. The most expressive song on the CD, written with Ryan Adams.
7) Hold On
Wonderful example of pop-rock. The captivating repetition of the track grabs your mind and pulls you along with it.
8 ) Smart Girls
Tracks like this are probably why Weezer lyrics get criticised. You'll either really like it or skip it. Feathery, run-of-the-mill and feels manufactured.
9) Brave New World
This song has some energy to it, but doesn't seem to get anywhere. You might skip this.
10) Time Flies
Feels almost like a demo, a nice song to sing along with. A cute little song with a unique vibe to the other tracks of the record.
Rating: 6.5 / 10
By and large, a large improvement on the previous album. A cool, upbeat pop album, if not revolutionary or inspiring.
