More Driving Safety With The Reversing Camera

Most people today have a certain kind of vehicle. And wherever that vehicle goes, possibilities are it will encounter a situation where it needs to backup, whether to park appropriately, get out of a tight parking spot, or sometimes to allow other people or vehicles to pass in front. These conditions require a good amount of experience and judgment to avoid hitting that car in the back. For experienced drivers, this creates little problem, but what about the beginners? And what if that person is driving a highly expensive vehicle? Chances are that hesitation and tension will go up, unless the car has got a reversing camera.

The reversing camera, or backup camera as it is sometimes called, is a simple video camera system that is installed at the rear of the car, usually around the area of the license plate. Through a screen on the dashboard, it helps the driver to better judge the distance and possible obstacles at the vehicle's rear. Hence, the driver can make the proper adjustments to avoid those barriers. However, a reversing camera is not the same as the other video cameras available. One cannot install any other camera and expect the same effect.

A big advantage of the reversing camera (versus the usual cameras), is that the picture it displays is horizontally flipped. This indicates that the orientation of the image is just like the one on the driver's rear view mirror, where the left side of the image represents the driver's left side as he sits on the driver's seat. This is very important to avoid confusion while backing up.

Another benefit of the reversing camera is the wide-angle lens. This usually gives the image a curved look, or a fish eye view. Although it deforms the objects a little, it does give a wider view of the area behind the car, and can reveal little obstacles at the periphery, for example a metal post that lies just beyond the bumper's corner, which can potentially damage the car. In addition, the lens is also directed a little downward to enhance visibility.

Then there is the LCD monitor. These can reveal all sorts of useful information based on the model, such as the distance measurement to the closest object, the view from other cameras installed on the car (one can have multiple cameras installed for added safety), as well as the infrared data from night vision devices. Some would even have an incorporated speaker for giving audio feedback also.

There are also many variations and optional components that one can install with the camera. One of them is a servo, to allow manual control of the camera to whichever direction the driver likes. Another one is the night vision system, to allow good vision when backing up in dimly lit areas. One can also choose mobile camera systems, or a license plate mounted camera, for those vehicles which do not have an LCD in the dashboard. These help more vehicles to obtain the advantages of this reversing camera system.
