The cutoff area is not really stated by the search engines, its a gray area. Generally speaking, I try not to post more than 20 identical copies of the same article I write to the web.
Once you have your article ready to publish, you need to make a decision. You can sign up for an account at a niche article directory and personally publish each spun copy of your article and then repeat that process hundreds of times, or you can use software tools to speed up the process. I am always a big believer that preserving time is the most significant hurdle in internet marketing. I am also a believer that you should find a free article directory before you ever pay to have your article published. The same goes with software - often with a bit of searching, you can find some great free software that some others have created and shared, and make your job easier.
